Do both parties in a divorce need a lawyer?

I have a friend that is in the middle of a divorce and just received the papers. Does he need a lawyer to look them over? There are some things that he wants to contest.

There is no legal requirement to have an attorney, but, especially if your friend, wants to contest issues and is not in the state where the action is filed your friend would be well advised to retain an attorney.
