Legal Question in Family Law in Washington

Rights of Adoptive Parent after Divorce

A friend of mine is going through a divorce, he had adopted his wife's son just a few years ago. How is child support and custody determined? Can he legally give up his rights to the child?

Thank you for your time.

Re: Rights of Adoptive Parent after Divorce

If your friend did a formal adoption of the child, he is the presumed father for purposes of child support. He will be responsible for paying child support. In addition, he would have parental rights in the child. If your friend doesn't already have an attorney, I would recommend that he consult one very soon.
