Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Washington

Disclosure of Personal Information

I was wondering if someone can sue you if you disclose personal information about that person? This is between two friends.

Re: Disclosure of Personal Information

I'd need a lot more information to answer that question accurately. When you disclose information in a deposition or a declaration addressed to the court file, you are required to tell the truth under penalty of perjury, and your statements are privledged.

If someone believes you have stated information about them that is inaccurate or untruthful, they could sue you for libel or slander or both.

But disclosing personal information in a privledged proceeding is different.

Its similar to the principle where you cannot be sued over making a police report. Those statements are privledged.

Hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell
