Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Washington

Dog Ownership Problem

Hi,

This situation pertains to Washington State. About a year ago I purchased a 5 week old boxer mix. I trained him and took care of him very well. I have vet bills paid for, food receipts and I can print out my bank statement which has the money I took out to purchase him. Well, back in July I needed to move to California and couldn't take Riley with me due to no pets on the lease of our duplex. My ex-boyfriend said that he would take care of him for me at my expense and that I could come get him when I was ready. I have been ready for months and now he does not want to give him back. I drove 16 hours back up to WA to get him and the door was slammed in my face. The police stated that they can't take possession of him for me because the fact that I left him with them for any amount of time makes the whole thing complicated.

Riley is my best friend and more then my own wants of getting him back, I do not want him to grow up in this environment. I don't know what else I can do and because I do not live here in WA anymore, I don't want to have to come back for a long court case. I know it would have to be civil and I've never dealt with anything like this.

Sorry, but California courts would not have jurisdiction over this case. Since your ex won't cooperate and the police won't help, your only recourse is through the Washington courts.

The good news is that you may be able to get your dog back through small claims court. Small claims cases are quicker and less expensive than other litigation.
