Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Washington

financial aid

My roommates' only source of income is financial aid for school. He checked his bank account tonight and found that someone had put a levy against his account and emptied it. Is it legal to levy financial aid?

Re: financial aid

Who placed the levy? Levies can be placed by the government for taxes, child support, etc. If so, they do not care about the source of your roommate's funds. However, the law requires notice to your roommate before placing a levy.

Contact the bank to get contact information for who placed the levy. You can take the matter up directly with them.

Re: financial aid

If your roommate has a garnishment order placed on his bank account pursuant to a valid judgment, the creditor doesn't care what the source of the funds is.

If this the sum total of your roommates' assets, he needs to talk to an attorney as soon as possible. What a mess.
