Inactive civil lawsuit

How long can a civil lawsuit remain open without any activity by plaintiff or defendent?

In Washington State, if there has been absolutely no activity by either party for a year, the clerk on their own motion can dismiss the case.

There are lots of exceptions to this rule.

You can look at the court file; there will be a case scheduling order in some counties that requires certain entries to be made by certain dates. If the case scheduling order is not followed, the case can be dismissed.
