Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Washington
Old nanny's belongings
I have a live-in nanny who quit but had a laptop delivered here after she moved out. She owes me $1200 (or the receipts verifying what she spent the money on). Can I withhold the laptop from her (it is worth far less than the money owed) until she removes herself from the 'nanny' account and repays the money (or provides receipts)? If I can't hold it, am I required to keep it out of the elements or can I remove it from my home?

Re: Old nanny's belongings
Unintended bailments are problematic. The laptop is not related to the money you think she owes you, except that she is the owner.
Better to send her a certified letter to her new address and tell her that you have the laptop, or simply send her the laptop, and a letter spelling out what you believe she owes you, close the account or delete her access, and give her a chance to make it right. Once you have done that, you are in a better position to decide what to do with her property.
But I wouldn't confuse the issues.
Hope this helps. Powell
