Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Washington

stolen laptop from friends car

I had my laptop stolen from my friends car after lending it to her for use for school. She left it in her cars back seat in plain view and then went on a trip out of state. I had told her to put it away and not leave it in her car. About 2 days after she had left her car was broken into and my laptop was stolen. She is now saying she will not pay to replace my property. Is there anything I can do to obtain at least partial payment for my propety?

Re: stolen laptop from friends car

Ask her for the name of her auto insurance policy holder, and ask what her policy covers re property stolen out of her car.

Ask her if she filed a police report.

If you get nowhere, file a suit in small claims for the computer. She has a duty to look after your property while it is in her care, and leaving a laptop in plain view doesn't sound like reasonable care.

Ask for the value of the computer, and so long as it is less than $4000.00 you'll do fine in small claims.
