Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Washington

Tow Boat from private property

To help out a neighbor we let his brother in law store his boat in our yard. Originally it was supposed to be for a couple weeks but it has now been 9 months a we have been unable to get him to remove the boat. Over the past month alone we have talked to him on 5 different occasions to make arrangements for the boat to be moved, but so far he has not removed it.

What rights to I have in regards to having this boat towed off my property? Can I just call up a towing company, have them pick it up, and charge him for the towing and storage? Do I need to provide a specific timeframe for him to remove the boat before towing it or is the past 8 months enough?

Re: Tow Boat from private property

You need to give him written notice that the boat storage is not working out. You need to give him formal notice and an opportunity to cure the problem. There is no precise notice period, but 30 days seems reasonable.

Tell him that if the boat is not gone in 30 days, you will have it towed away.

Then you can call a tow company. The tow company can take it away and charge the owner for the tow and storage, etc.
