Legal Question in Immigration Law in Washington

recent immigration bill passed

Having heard the senate committee on judiciary had approved a new immigration bill to make undocumented immigrant to be legalize and thereafter eligible for citizenship.

1.Could you please explain the details and modalities for filing

2. And secondly, what are the effects of filing for this newly passed immigrataion benefit if one had already filed for i-687 and still awaiting decision from uscis?

3.Finally, if there are problems associated with already filed for i-687 as against the newly passed bill, what options are there to consider?

Thank You

Re: recent immigration bill passed

I strongly caution you to be careful of taking any action that affects your immigration status based upon media reports. Some of the reports are extremely thorough and accurate, however in the past few days I have heard grossly distorted accounts of the pending immigration bill.

At this time there is NO new law. The senate has NOT approved a final version of the bill, and it has NOT been submitted to Bush for signature. In its current state it does not confer a road to citizenship. Keep tuned to reports, as the final version should be approved within the next week.

Once it is passed, the USCIS must then make regulations to implement the new law. This takes additional time. You will have an opportunity to study the new law to determine how it affects your case.

I687 is a fairly uncommon filing. If you are a member of the class, the only real problem for you would be to establish your continuous presence. Do nothing that would jeopardize that filing at this time.
