Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Washington
I am creating a short 2-min movie as a "trailer" for my new novel. I would like to have a popular alternative song playing in the background. My question is, is it legal for me to use that song, because I am not selling the video itself (although it is essentially an advertisement for my book)? The video would be on youtube and embedded in my book's website.
Thank you!

You must get permission from the copyright owner. Whether permission invlolves you paying a fee is up to the copyright owner. You may not use someone's copyrighted material (book, song, article, etc.) without that permission, except in very limited circumstances, which do not apply in your situation.
