commissionable income chargeback

i work on commission for a car dealer. i did a deal where the customer wrote a large down payment check that bounced. check was more than profit. they are now taking my commission back because of this. Is this legal

If you have an employment contract with your employer, that would, of course, also play a role in your rights.

If they are taking back the commission for this sale, for which the check bounced, that is legal. The check bounced and so the sale did not go through, I am assuming. (The buyer may be in possession of the car at the moment, but that is likely to change.)

If they are dipping into your commission received from other sales to cover the bounced check, that is probably not legal, though I would need more information from you before saying for sure.
