Legal Question in Employment Law in Washington

I was hired for a position at a state university over two internal candidates. One has been very gracious about it, but the other is stirring up all kinds of trouble. He has gotten a bunch of faculty to come together to protest my hiring and say that he is more qualified for the position. Ironically, one of these faculty was on the hiring committee. The faculty have gotten the deans and VP of research involved. They are apparently now doing some sort of evaluation of the situation. My boss who is the Director under the VP stands by the hiring committee decision, but I'm pretty worried what might come out of it. If I am removed from my position due to this- what are my legal grounds? It was very expensive to move and set up home for this position and I did not get relocation. It will look very bad on my resume to hold a position for such a short time. The rest of my staff have said they are very happy working for me and are also very scared I might be removed. I'm not sure what to do.
