Legal Question in Employment Law in Washington

No payment for employment

I was employed as an Independent Consultant the company for TMNG (www.tmng.com). This company is a consulting firm that is unique because instead of hiring employees they hire are independent consultants.

I had never worked for them before or heard anything bad about them. The problem started because they call you on a Wednesday and ask you if you can be over 3,000 miles away on Monday morning. . I used my own credit card to make hotel reservations etc.

On Thursday that gentleman (Ron) called me and told me that I was off the project. He reason was the problem I had starting the document and he said the customer did not think I was "getting". I was informed that I needed to stay and work that day and Friday. I did as I was told and completed the document and sent it to my co-worker on Sunday.

This gentleman made a remark about me not getting paid if the customer does not want to pay me.

They owe me $6000.00 for my time and about $3,000.00 for expenses. My question is can they not pay me? I did not get my contract until after I arrived at the customer site.
