Legal Question in Employment Law in Washington

Quit for ethical issues with company

I quit my job because the company was using a new building for space that had no work permits(because it was denied due to not having enough fire exits)there were employees in the building when they were painting and constructing and there wasn't enough exits. They also proceeded in licensing the buiding through the state of Washington and used my name on the license. I quit my job because I didn't want to be held liable if someone was injured or the state came after them for falsifying information. I plead my case for unemployment and won the case. But I am still unemployed and had to leave a job that I was at for ten years into a job market that is horrible. I wanted to know if I had any recourse?

Yes, it is possible you could sue them for "wrongful discharge in violation of public policy" if they were breaking the law and not responding to your protests about it. You would have to show a "constructive discharge" which means your quit is treated as a termination because any reasonable person under those circumstances would feel compelled to quit because of intolerable and illegal working conditions. This is the same standard, in words, as used for unemployment, but is applied more generously by the unemployment people than in lawsuits. I think you should be calling lawyers about this.

Check the National Employment Lawyers Association website for referrals. I am willing to consult with you for my normal $200 consultation fee.
