Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Washington

Apartment Managers $%*@&% us

We were in an apartment from 10/05 to 06/07. We did not break our lease and have a $400 bill with an agreed 60 days to pay. The new place will not let us in until we pay completely. I have been recently diagnosed with a food allergy that took 3 months to find. I have lost 3 months work and pay because of. My job still waits for me, but I cannot move in to my new home because of the bill. We are living in a tent in my wife's parent's backyard with 2 year old child. With 10 of our ''15 day allowed stay'' gone we are stuck. No place will be open in the next month at least. The new place has or apps. and deposit. They have the only money we have. They require a co-signer, that's fine. They still wont let us in until old debt is payed. I can pay it in 60 days but not 5. If I cold have signed the new place before I was out of the old place it would not be an issue. Is there any way to stop my family from being homeless?

Washington has a policy against having homeless children. Since you are in a tent on private property you are not, really, homeless.

Why are you committing to a new place that has such a draconian attitude towards your old debt?

Your right is to vote with your feet and choose another place. Is there any reason why you cannot go back and get your money and say, "no thanks"?

If they say they will not return it, you can alert the media. You have a compelling story.

I wish I could tell you there was a right to housing, but there is not. At least it isn't January.

Hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell
