criminal convictions and renting

i keep applying for appartments and keep getting denied. What should i do and what would be the best step to take concerning this matter.

If the apartments where you are applying deny your application, they have to tell you if the denial was based on a credit check they did, and give you a copy of the credit report they ran so you can verify or correct the record.

They cannot deny based on impermissible discrimination - e.g. because of your racial background, or gender or disabilities, and most places know better.

If you have a criminal record, you would know that, so perhaps the issue is credit or rental history.

Some places don't check.

But for places that do, they have to give you a copy of the information they used to deny you housing.

If they won't, then contact Washington's Human Rights Commission in Olympia and figure out why.
