In Pierce County, use Google to find the volunteer legal services web site under the Tacoma Pierce County Bar Association's web site.

A notice of appearance has the caption of the case, and just tells the court and the plaintiff your name and address where you want to receive further documents. The VLS website will have one you can use as an example.

You can choose not to respond, in which case the plaintiff landlord will win by default.

If you respond - in writing- then there has to be a hearing where you can present your defense. Be sure to go to the hearing.

You can tell the court whatever you need to say.
