Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Washington
''Landlord'' holding my property for ransom
I lost my job in October 2005 and I needed a place to stay. This so called ''friend'' said that I could stay at his house. Even though this person is a drug user, I accepted, because I also did, and I thought he was a good person. A month after I moved in, he said I had to pay $500 a month rent. I said OK. I had no other choice. He also let me work for him cleaning for $15 an hour that could be applied to the rent. Well, three weeks ago, I decided that this life for me was bullshit, and I stopped using drugs and decided to get it together. I literally escaped leaving everything(inc ID/SSC) now he won't give me my property unless he's paid $750. And I am left with nothing, not even my toothbrush or ID so that I can get a job. We had no contract and I want to know if this is legal. HELP!!

Re: ''Landlord'' holding my property for ransom
Nope, it is not legal at all. He's engaging in "distress for rent" which was outlawed in WA in 1973. You can look it up at RCW 59.18.230 (4).
BE VERY careful not to threaten him such that he runs off to court for a restraining order. DO SEND him a polite letter - certified, and first class, and post it on the door if you cannot reach him in person - stating that you want your property back right now, that what he's doing is unlawful, and that you will get your stuff, and a court if involved will require this guy to pay your reasonable attorney fees and costs of suit if it has to go to court.
Tell him the law, and leave the ball in his court. Good luck - Powell
