Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Washington

can I get out of a lease?

I signed a lease with my boyfriend for him to get an apartment but I have my own place and really do not live there. I have since found out that he was evicted from his last apartment and now he has been late on rent the past 2 months. I am afraid he is going to get evicted and take my good history down with him. Is there any way I can get my name off the lease?

Re: can I get out of a lease?

You are either a co-tenant or a co-signer, I can't really tell from your question.

And no, once having signed the thing, there is not a good way to get out of it. If he's evicted from the new place, you will likely be obligated to pay at least one month's rent if he leaves, under whatever circumstances, before the lease expires.

If that were to happen, your recourse is to sue him for the rent you became obligated for.

Not pretty, I know. Hope this helps you know where you stand - Powell
