Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Washington

Reasonable care law???

Recently my apartment was broken into. They knocked off the door knob and kick the door in. Now I found the door slightly ajar and I found cans of food on the outside banister. My manager informed me that he saw the cans and the knob broken off! He said he called me, but when I looked up the calls log on his phone, my number was never in it and nothing was in mine. He did not even call the police to investigate. Now I want to get out of the last month of my lease. Is there some sort of reasonable care clause somewhere in the Landlord/Tenant law that I can scare them into letting me out of my last month of my lease? Thank you very, very much,--name removed--M.--name removed--

Re: Reasonable care law???

One of a landlord's duties is to provide reasonably secure locks. Write him a letter and ask (demand, really) that he provide you with reasonably secure locks. Reference the incident; write nicely, the letter may wind up in front of a judge.

Tell him that if he doesn't immediately replace the locks with decent ones, you will elect to terminate the lease.

Good luck with this. Powell
