I don't think it's necessary for you to have an attorney before the scope is performed. However, an attorney can help to the extent there are issues relating to paying for the bill and coordinating with the appropriate insurance carriers. We've handled several knee injury cases and would be happy to help.

Re: Auto Accident
I usually tell people it is in their best interests to at least consult with a lawyer if it looks like the injuries may be permanent, or fairly severe, or involve surgery, or where the damages may exceed $10,000. But not every case needs a lawyer. Whether your case does will depend on the facts of your case. If I had to guess at this point, I would advise you to at least talk to an experienced personal injury lawyer because I know how significant knee injuries and knee surgery can be. I have handled many similar types of cases. I have also published a book for accident victimis ("The Ten Biggest Mistakes that Can Wreck Your Washington Accident Case") and I offer it free to Washington residents. Re: Auto Accident
It's always important for the injured victim to talk with a lawyer as soon as possible, for several reasons. First, a lawyer can learn the facts of the accident from you and other sources (e.g., witnesses or the police), and second, can help identify all potential sources of revenue (medical insurance policy, medpay, PIP coverage, etc.)to pay for your medical care. A lawyer is critical in analyzing insurance issues.
A lawyer can also suggest the doctor will help his patient by helping to preserve evidence - e.g., we often contact the doctor's office and ask if there are methods for him to highlight the surgery, such as by a videocam (used in some hospitals or day surgery centers), or by at least taking approprite photographs of the surgery. This is critical to your case - preserving the best evidence of the injury.

I am sorry to hear of your accident and knee injury. I've suffered knee injuries myself and know just how painful and debilitating that is.
As for your case, it can certainly benefit you to contact me right away. We can assist with keeping the medical bills from becoming an issue to you. Also, we can gather and preserve evidence to make your case strong.
That said, there is no need to consult before the surgery. Best luck with the surgery.
