Insurance can't cover cost

My mother was involved in a car accident about a year and half ago. The other day the insurance company contacts us and says if they cant cover the entire cost that we would be liable for the extra amount. (It was a small rear end) what are our options in terms of defence?

Insurance will pick up part of the rental car payments up until the point, typically, when they pay off the car damage. Then you are on your own. I would be happy to talk to you about it in more detail further.
