check's memo line changed

can my landlord change the memo line on my check ?

Memo lines do not have the authority of law, but once an instrument is written, the only place the recipient should be making changes is on the back where he signs it.

If this happened recently, I would write him a letter and memorialize in your letter what the memo section originally said, and that you noticed he changed it, and that you are making a record that you did not approve or authorize his change to your memo section of your check.

Did he negotiate the check? That's the big issue.
