Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Washington

home ownership = unmarried

I'm ashamed to say that I found out a year ago my live-in boyfriend of 7 years has become a drug addict. We own our home together and after completing an in-patient treatment program, I'm doubtful about his recovery. I'm inclined to sell the house before I'm driven to financial ruin. Any advice on what I should do to protect myself and my 14 year old daughter? The house is in our name. Credit cards accounts are individual.

Very similar to another question recently posted, but new addition of child and drug issues.

If you own the house jointly you cannot unilaterally make the decision to sell it.

This is a family law problem and you would do best to have a consult and get some solid advice. Family lawyers are best for sorting out what to do AFTER you have made the decision to end the relationship. If the house is jointly titled, a court can (and will) decide who keeps what portion, who gets a portion of the equity.

Hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell
