Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Washington

Owner Real Estate Contract

Several years ago I purchased my home from someone who carried the contract. Payments were originally made to the person's bank and then later to a contract service. This past September I paid off the contract and I have written confirmation of this from the contract service. Here is my problem: The contract service does not have the deed to the property. The person I purchased the home from passed away last March. I contacted the person's heir about a month ago. They have not provided the appropriate documents to the contract service to claim the payments I have made since March (including a final payment of approximately $8,000.00). The heir seems unconcerned about the whole matter and does not seem to be in a hurry to sign the deed over to me. My Quetion: Is there a time limit in which the seller has to sign the deed over to the buyer once the buyer has fulfilled the contract? Thank You

Re: Owner Real Estate Contract

The law requires that the title be transferred within a reasonable time after tghe contract is paid off. The probate of the estate of the seller might delay this process somewhat but not by many months. You should make dfemand upon the estate to transfer title by sending a certified letter to the attorney for the estate. If that doesn't work, see an attorney immediately.
