Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Washington

Our property in someone elses name

We own a mobile home on a piece of land. The mobile is taxed as personnel property. We have clear title of the mobile. It is time to pay taxes and we found the county has our mobile in someone elses name. We call the county and they just put the mobile as on our property but owned by the other people. How do we get this error corrected? How could the county or these people get their name as owners of our mobile we dont even know them. Please advise what to do thank you.

Re: Our property in someone elses name

Start by finding the title to the MH, and your tax statements and your deed to your real property. Attach copies to a letter. The letter should state what is attached and list the attachments. The letter should request that the County correct their records to reflect that you are the owners of the MH. The letter should be addressed to the assessor/treasurer, or the official in your county in charge of taxes on personal property.

This sounds like an error, not malfeasance. There *could be* identity theft or title theft going on. You could check your credit report just to be sure that everything else checks out OK.

This is an odd situation, but statistically possible. Start by asking them to fix it. Do it in writing. Calling won't help. Be prepared to prove you own the MH.

Hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell
