Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Washington

We received notification from an attorney (completely out of the blue) regarding my husbands parents home that was sold at foreclosure. Both his parents are deceased now and the attorney says there is money left over from the sale and that he can help us claim it. Is this something that we can handle ourselves without handing over 1/3 of the funds (if there really are any)? Where do we find this information?

You pay an attorney what you agree to pay an attorney. If there are proceeds from the sale, then those proceeds go to the estate without much difficulty. The estate will need to be divied up appropriately based upon the terms of the will or laws of intestacy.

Beware that there are scams that start off this way. If it is an actual attorney (check www.wsba.org for Washington state attorney directory), then it is probably not a scam, but rather is a solicitation (probably).
