Legal Question in Traffic Law in Washington

I got a citation for leaving my 3 young children (under the age of 16) in our vehicle while it was running while I ran in the grocery store to buy diapers and milk. I have a court date and don't know what to expect. I left the keys in the ignition so their kid's music would play. I didn't know that having the keys in the ignition make it against the law. I still think it's a horrible idea but had no idea I was actually committing a crime. This charge is a misdemeaner and can have some pretty serious outcomes. Should I get a lawyer? How should I prepare for this? I also received a visit from CPS. I feel horribly guilty about what I did, realize what a terrible judgement call it was and will never do it again. My plan was to speak from my heart and tell the judge these things, is that going to be enough?

If you have the ability to hire a lawyer I recommend you do so. Courts and prosecutors vary. Some are nice to you because you don't have a lawyer. Others take advantage. You aren't familiar enough with the system to know what the situation is when you get there. So, I recommend getting a lawyer who is. If you've never been in trouble before you should be able to avoid the "pretty serious outcomes" with a decent lawyer assisting you. Contact me directly if you'd like further assistance.
