Legal Question in Traffic Law in Washington

Hi, just a quick question. Last week I got pulled over for driving with suspended license. I went to court today and pleaded not guilty. I was unaware at the time that my license had been suspended. Should I have just pleaded Guilty and paid the fines? And can I go in and change my plea?

If you were unaware of the suspension, I suspect it was the result of failing to pay a ticket or cancellation of insurance. In either case, reinstating your license should not be difficult.

Typically, if you are able to reinstate your driving privilege, the prosecuting attorney may be willing to reduce the misdemeanor charge to an infraction, e.g. No License On Person or No Valid Operater's License w/ID.

I would encourage you to pursue this alternative rather than change your plea to guilty. Contact the prosecuting attorney's office and inquire what your options they suggest.

To answer your question, a defendant can change a plea to gulty anytime, but you should not at this time.
