Legal Question in Traffic Law in Washington

Statue of limitations

I need to know the statute of limitations on a speeding and no proof of insurance ticket recieved in Lewis County, WA, in 1993. I went to court in Nov. 1993, but was never able to pay the fine.

Re: Statue of limitations inapplicable

A statute of limitations determines the time period during which a charge must be filed. If you appeared in court, it was in response to the filing of your infraction/charge.

If your question is how long the state can attempt to collect the fine, you may be able to argue that the fine, as a civil judgment, is unenforceable after 10 years (11/03). See RCW 6.17.020. I am not aware of this argument being raised, successfully or unsuccessfully.

I imagine the matter has been turned over to collection and you owe a sizeable sum. It may be in your best interest to negotiate a settlement with the collection agency. If you value your time, you will find that it is more cost effective to settle than spend hours upon hours trying to tangle with the court.
