Legal Question in Traffic Law in Washington
Traffic Violation In Seattle, WA
It was my first time driving in America. I was learning to drive this morning using my roommate's car and got pulled over.
I received 3 violations:
- No valid driver license: ($550)
I dont have a USA driver license but I have an International Driver License. I was cited for $550 and checked online where it says the fine should be $250. Can i contest it?
- Expired Tab ($216)
Apparently, the car has an expired tab. Am i liable to pay for this fine? since I am not the owner of the car
- No proof of insurance. ($550)
I didnt know that an insurance is required and have no idea that my roommate's didnt have an insurance on his car.
I cant afford to pay the ticket since it cost $1316.
What will happen if I didnt pay the ticket? If the ONLY consequences is can never get a driver's license then I have nothing to worry about.
I tought he was being nice lending me his car so i could learn to drive, now i regretted it so much.
Thanks so much for your time, I appreciate your help/advice.

Re: Traffic Violation In Seattle, WA
You have some very serious problems. The fact that you had an international license was fine but the vehicle you were driving was not properly documented. By the way, if you have an international license, why do you need to learn to drive? This does not make sense. In this state (Washington), when a driver takes control of the vehicle and drives that vehicle, he or she is liable for the safe and legal operation of that vehicle. The expired tabs are your responsibility because you were driving the vehicle. The lack of insurance is also your responsibility as the law requires the driver to show the proof odf insurance. The license issue is less of a problem because you will have to show that you are licensed in your home state or country and that is the reason you have an international license. You will have to contest this ticket becuase if you do not and do not pay the fine, your privilege to drive in this state will be suspended and if you are caught driving after a suspension goes into effect, you will be arrested for Driving While License Suspended Third Degree. That offense is a criminal traffic offense and carries a possible maximum penalty of up to one year in jail and a $5,000.00 fine. Therefore, contest the ticket, have your friend obtain tabs and insurance and gp to court with an attorney. Good Luck!
