Legal Question in Traffic Law in Washington
Vehicle we sold has been impounded
We gave a vehicle (1976 Luv Truck) to friends over two years ago. They have since sold this vehicle. Today I recieved a notice of Impound for this vehicle. I was told that we had to file a ''report of vehicle sale'' to our state. I have never heard of such a thing! As far as I know--once you sign the title over...(and our friends DID put the title of the Luv Truck into their name)---the sale is complete. However, the towing company says WE are liable for these charges. We don't have the title, nor the keys...and neither have we OWNED this truck in over two years. Isn't signing the title over good enough? Our friends sold the truck to a stranger...and can't remember his name! Are we stuck??? Thank You.

Re: Vehicle we sold has been impounded
The operative phrase is signing the title over. The question is: Did your friends ever put the truck into their names? If they just kept that signed title that you gave them and then gave it to the next buyer, who never registered that vehicle, then you would still show as the owner of record. That would be the case even two years later. You need to check this situation out to see what the facts are exactly. Good Luck!
