Adding a name to a Power of Attorney
My mother is 89 years old and signed a Power of Attorney several years ago giving my older sister, whom she was living with at the time, POA. In August, 2002, care of my mother has changed to me. My question is: What is the easiest way to add my name to the Power of Attorney? Do we have to go to the expense of an attorney?

The easiest way to deal with the change is to hire an attorney to draft a new POA and to review the situation. It shouldn't cost more than $50-100. However, there are self-help forms that you may be able to access on the internet. But if you screw up you have no one to sue. Also, your mother should probable revoke the old DPA. Make it easy on you and your mother -- spend a half hour speaking with an attorney and sign a new POA.
