Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Washington

My father passed away in WA, apparently his do it at home will is not valid. And his deed says husband and wife. Being a common property state - shouldn't my mom get everything? The lawyer - or so my brother says - states that she does not. That she only gets half and the rest is split between his heirs.
