I am a Morgantown WV lawyer, and I am not aware of any law that requires a written letter of termination. There are certain requirements on payment of wages and benefits promptly after the termination, covered by the Wage Payment and Collection Act; however, I am not aware of any provision therein or elsewhere requiring written termination notice. WV is an "at-will" employment state, which means the employer can fire an employee on the spot. Exceptions to this rule would be where the employer is bound by collective bargaining or other contractual rights, or where the employer is a government or statutory employer. These are all issues that could affect the answer to this question. Moreover, if you have concerns about the way that you were terminated, this forum should not substitute for speaking with a WV employment lawyer, who can discuss with you the peculiarities of your case and conduct further research to provide accurate answers to address your issues.
