Re: identety theft and false information

"Identity theft" involves more than just revealing personal information about you. It involves using that information to disguise one's self as you and obtain goods, services, information, etc. in your name. Writing "falsehoods pretending to be" you could qualify, but I would need to know more about what happened before I could say whether you have a case.

While you may not have a viable claim for identity theft, there may be other causes of action available. Depending upon what information was revealed, you may be able to sue for invasion of privacy and/or for intentional infliction of emotional distress. Without more information I can't begin to say how strong these claims may be.

The lack of information also prevents me from offering an opinion about whether the "slanderish things" that were said or the impersonations of you would qualify as defamation or whether they would support some other cause of action against the perpetrators. Among the things I would need to know is how the people who received the information reacted to it; if no one believed any of it your claim would be pretty weak.
