Legal Question in Entertainment Law in West Virginia

Dog/Horse racing trend tracking

Say you dump results from horse and dog races into a database so that you could track trends for your own personal information. I'm fairly certain the race results are considered public information and you would be in the clear, am I right?

But say your friends wanted access to this database, and even offered to pay you for access. What legal complications could be involved? Just civil, or legal as well? Does this vary state to state? Would it make any difference if only generic names and numbers were used? (i.e. just Chicago - 23 instead of Chicago Bulls - Michael Jordan, just as an example.)

This type of information is public and I don't see any problems with using it. But you obviously need to ensure that you avoid falling under gambling legislation.
