Legal Question in Family Law in West Virginia

Marriage/Divorce question

I'm a U.S. citizen that got married in South America and he came here after receiving his perm. resident card. My question is are we legally married here? How would I get a divorce since I never got married here?

Re: Marriage/Divorce question

If your marriage was valid and lawful under the laws of the country in which the marriage occurred, the marriage will be recognized as lawful by the state laws of the United States. In sum, YES, you are legally married here, even though the wedding ceremony took place in South America.

If you now whidh to get a divorce, you would do so in the same manner as if the wedding ceremony had occurred in the United States. That the wedding occurred in South American is of no relevance.
