Legal Question in Social Security Law in West Virginia

My wife was recently denied for social security disability, her lawyer didn't even meet with her till the day of the hearing. Her only contact was with his secretary who kept telling her everything was fine, turns out in the Judges ruling on most of the items cited for denying the claim were inaccurate and or out of date. This lawyer took the case on a contingency basis my question is since we have been denied are we free to find another attorney to handle the appeal or are we stuck with this inadequate lawyer?
