Power of Attorney for companions?

My aunt has been living with someone for over 12 years and he was recently injured and is in a coma. Can she be his power of attorney? She is not able to pay bills without his last 2 paychecks with she cannot cash do to his coma. What are her rights as a companion?

I'm afraid that a companion has no rights unless they're bestowed by the person or the Court. In other words, if your aunt's friend had given her a written power of attorney, or if the mental hygene commissioner upon her petition, notice and hearing would appoint you aunt his conservator, then she would be able to take care of his affairs.
