Legal Question in Business Law in Wisconsin
I live in Wisconsin. My employer, a newspaper, is holding a sales contest this month. The prizes have ranged from candy bars to cans of soda to books to days off. However, I won a \"mystery bag\" that contained a can of beer. I am extremely offended by this as I have had alcohol problems in the past and felt this was an extremely tacky move. My question is \"Is it legal to provide alcohol in the workplace as a form of compensation in the state of Wisconsin?\" Thank you,

I do not know of any prohibition in WI against providing alcohol in the workplace. Breweries in Milwaukee, for example, have long had bars available to employees free of charge and have historically even allowed drinking on the job. I'm not sure that your scenario really amounts to using alcohol has "compensation" any more than the brewery situation or even if using alcohol as a form of compensation is in any way prohibited in WI. I would therefore recommend that you retain an experienced employment lawyer to research this issue for you, since that is not my specialty. My comments here are not intended as legal advice unless you subsequently retain me and revisit this issue with me at that time.
