Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Wisconsin

Defamation of Character

What is the definition of defamation of character? I have been told a response to part of a recent email defamed an individual and probably could resolve the despute with an apology. However, I do not feel I have done anything wrong. I did not change the comment except to only shortened the sentence that contained the comment. I simply questioned these comments and responded and copied other parties of interest.

Defamation by repetition is hard to prove in the context of journalism, but hurt feelings on-line or in print can baloon way out of proportion until there *is* a legal issue.
