Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Wisconsin
Discrimination
I have worked for the same company for 23 years, worked my way up to middle management, no one had any negative comments about me through all that time. I was married then divorced about 18 months ago. The reason I was divorced was that I am gay. The owner of the company hates gay people. The owner found out I was gay, and that was it. My boss was given an untimatium...that she was to get rid of me or she was gone. She was let go and I just found out about this, and the reason she was let go and the reason now that I was. All I have so far is my former bosses comments and co-workers that she confided in. Can I take legal action on this alone..the company says they layed me off because of the economy, but I have several friend still at the company saying there was no reason for it?..can you give me a direction to go in ?

Re: Discrimination
Sexual orientation is not a legitimate reason for terminating ones employment. Contact the EEOC, that is a federal agency whose full name is the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission. They may carry the ball for you, if your evidence is truly convincing. If not, they will issue you a "right to sue letter" and you can take that to any attorney, for action sooner than if you just walked into an attorney's office.
