Re: Impersonating someone to get information
It is lawful for a debt collector to contact third parties but only for the purpose of getting your contact information. The debt collector is not permitted to tell them that he or she is a debt collector attempting to collect a debt against you, and definitely should not be giving out any information regarding the alleged obligation. If a debt collector has made this kind of improper communication to a third-party, then you may have a right to recover damages against the debt collector for violating the federal fair debt collection practices act and possibly similar state laws. A consumer attorney would be able to give you advice about these matters. We have such an attorney in our office if you have further questons.
