how has the history of capital punishment influenced the what it is used today? what proof is there that the death penalty actually stops or prevents crimes? how do victims of the crime feel about the death penalty?

I would see your question more as a topic of a research paper, not so much as a legal question for an attorney. I think we all have our own individual opinions as to the death penalty and its effectiveness, but I really cannot answer your questions as they are posed.
