Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Wisconsin

Bal. 0 on all accounts

Hi,

I had a bills with a collection place i went to pay the bill in full and they gave me a statement that said a bal. on all my accts. and after i paid it in full it said i had a 0 bal.on all accts. and now they tell me that i still owe and the statement must mean on just one acct. but it says all accts.do i still have to pay even if my bill says o on all accts.i don't want to double pay and thats what they want me to do.they said it must have been a mistake that it said o and i told them i am not going to pay when my statement says o bal. what can i do.

Hello,

This is an impossible question to give a firm answer on with the few facts you have provided.

Generally, a debtor would not be excused for a debt just because a creditor makes a mistake on a statement. How this will turn out depends on how the statement reads, what the other accounts are, etc. Best wishes, Mark J. Mahoney
