Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Wisconsin

Collection agency gave me reciepts but say I still owe!!

My fiancee and I are trying to pay some debts off so that we can purchase a house. Long story short, I contacted the creditor, did a check by phone payment on the 17th of May, recieved a reciept for all four accounts paid in full dated the 22nd of May and then yesterday, I got a call from them saying that the account from the checks was not found, or pretty much they couldn't find the bank account with the numbers I gave them. I am positive that the numbers are correct, I took them right from the checkbook, but anyways, how can they send me reciepts saying the accounts are paid in full, if they aren't? Please help, I am supposed to go there tonight and I want to know if I can tell them that according to them, the accounts are paid. Thank you for any help you can offer!! :)

Even without knowing your facts in detail, I can predict that if the money has not actually been paid, the receipt will assist you very much in court if they sue you. Payment or nonpayment is a simple thing to verify via bank records and any judge is likely to let them correct any good faith error in giving you the reciept if they were not in fact paid. On the other hand, if you can prove that the funds from the check in question actually got to them, you can probably assert the paid receipt as a defense in court. Sincerely, Jay K. Nixon
