Co-signer responsibility

My Son co-signed a loan for a friend in 2004. Both he and the friend were over 18 at the time. The friend has since defaulted on the loan and moved to Canada.

Is there any legal way for him remove his obligation short of paying the loan off?

If he co-signed on the loan, he is bound by the terms of that contract.
