Bankruptcy for SSI Recipients, Creditor Harassment Aggravating Mental Illness and Stress

Generally speaking, creditors can do very little to persons with no assets who are receiving income which is exempt from most creditor claims (such as SSI--Supplemental Security Income) or other Social Security benefits. They can, however, legally contact them and discuss/encourage payments, which often amounts to a legal form of harassment. If these contacts are causing medical deterioration, unacceptable levels of stress, insomnia, or other health problems, the debtor should promptly discuss their situation with an experienced bankruptcy lawyer. Bankruptcy can often end the harassment and legally discharge debts.
